Quarries of Paris - Showroom mineralogy of the Rue Saint Jacques.

The showroom mineralogical most famous of Paris is the Salle Saint-Jacques. It was constructed by Major Gambier in the heart of the underground quarry system of the GRS (Great South network), just false catacombs at Denfert-Rochereau, in fact ossuaries in old underground quarries.

The side benches were used to display the site's geological curiosities. At the center of the room, a staircase dummy materialized superposition of limestone beds of the place. Each step was a sample. Originally, the name of each geological layer of rock was inscribed on the front steps of each room but this was very bumpy because too many visitors have visited illegal.

Can be found in certain geological showroom more difficult to access such information.

Quarries of Herblay are over 14km wide and some hundreds of meters deep, on hillsides along the Seine.

In 1776, the exploitation of new underground quarries in Paris was forbidden. People had to take the stone elsewhere. It is for this reason that the quarry was known as "Imperial quarry" or "Quarry of the city of Paris". They built many monuments in Paris with this stone because it was high quality (the famous Royal stone).

Among the monuments built, there was The Pantheon of Paris, Department of Marine Place de la Concorde, the Gare de l'Est, the mint as well as many statues at Versailles.

The network's quarries has been excessively exploited in Herblay. The ceiling is fragile and the walls separating the tunnels are very thin. To reinforce the quarry, they have added many pillars and reinforcement structures.

Later, like many underground quarries, they served to mushroom plantation in the 1980s. The workers have dug additional corridors between small quarries networks.

A few years later and they were gradually abandoned. The latest mushroom plantation closed in 1995.

Since 2003, the association "Herblay heritage" has undertaken to make public visits to the part of the "English entry" with the famous double-arched vault and pretty ponds.

Aquatic center abandoned of Chevry

In 1987, the council is negotiating with Compagnie Generale des Eaux construction of an aquatic center. In 1988, the new aquatic center is opened. The private company obtains a contract of 30 years, with the obligation to provide a public service for city schools.

After four years of operating deficits, the company Aqualand calls for an end of the concession January 31, 1993.

On 1 February 1993, the mayor bought the equipment and Aqualand becomes Aquagif.

Until 1997, the institution's financial health is sound. From 1998, a report from the Audit Office highlights a deterioration brought on by poor weather, increased personnel costs and expenses of heating and hot water (IFR200240 report).

The report also states that the municipality has used various means to hide the difficulties of the institution (Former Mayor Robert Trimbach will defend itself in its response to the use of a policy of long-term. IFO27010301 Report.)

Summer is the period which brings the most money and serves to balance the books. However, in May 2002, just before the summer, the aquatic center closes down.

An auction should take place but the building was battered scrap dealers. Christmas 2003, when the building is almost completely demolished, one can still see all the devices in the gym, ready to be thrown in the trash.
